DMX512协议最先是由USITT(美国剧院技术协会)发展成为从控制台用标准数字接口控制调光器的方式;RDM协议是在1990版DMX512协议之上，于2006年更新时提出的;主要增加了对于设备的配置、监测、管理的功能要求。

　　DMX512 (Digital Multiplex) is a standard issued by USITT for digital communication networks in that are commonly used to control stage lighting and effects.

　　RDM (Remote Device Management) is a protocol enhancement to USITT DMX512 that allows bi-directional communication between a lighting or system controller and attached RDM compliant devices over a standard DMX line. This protocol will allow configuration, status monitoring, and management of these devices in such a way that does not disturb the normal operation of standard DMX512 devices that do not recognize the RDM protocol.

　　All RDM devices have a unique identifier (UID) that consists of a manufacturer ID and serial number. Since all ROLEDS products meet DMX512 &RDM standard and ROLEDS now has the official certification issued by ESTA, ROLEDS is permitted to use the manufacturer ID on products while shipping.
